Skywatch Friday

We had to go pick up our dog's arthritis meds this morning, so daughter and I jumped in the car and off we went. It was soo cold! I still can't get warm. The sky shows what's on the way. I don't even want to think about it, but it appears winter is going to ruin Halloween this year.

This scene was taken at the Benzinger Golf Course in St. Marys, PA. I was there covering an awards' ceremony and the scene was too gorgeous to miss.

Even though it's only mid-October, we've already had snow! Thought I'd share a scene from our town on a frosty morning.

Skywatch Friday #54

This photo was taken at Kinzua Bridge State Park in Mt. Jewett, PA. The bridge was 301 feet (92 m) tall and 2,052 feet (625 m) long prior to its collapse.

The bridge was originally built from iron in 1882 and was billed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", holding the record as the tallest railroad bridge in the world for two years. In 1900 the bridge was dismantled and simultaneously rebuilt out of steel to allow it to accommodate heavier trains. It stayed in commercial service until 1959 and was sold to the state government of Pennsylvania in 1963, becoming the centerpiece of a state park. Restoration of the bridge began in 2002, but before it was finished, a tornado struck the bridge in 2003 causing a large portion of the bridge to collapse. Contributing to the collapse was the failure, caused by corrosion, of the anchor bolts holding the bridge towers to their foundations.

Yet another archive photo. This is the evil Darth Mittens checking out what Santa brought her for Christmas. Spoiled brat won't eat half the flavors we got her! Most cats would be thrilled to get Whiskas and Fancy Feast, but not the evil one! She'll look at the food and if it's not her favorite flavor, she'll just walk away screaming at us. CATS!

Photo Hunter: Favorite

This week's theme for Photo Hunt is favorite. I'm choosing my favorite place to visit - Gettysburg, PA. I know it might sound strange, but when we go to the town, I always feel at peace. It's a sad place, you can feel the weight of the thousands of young men and boys who were taken too soon, but it feels like I'm home. We try to get there every year.

Devil's Den is one of those places where hundreds were killed during battle. When it came time to clean up the bodies, the people just threw them in the cracks of the rocks. Until they began to decompose, then they had to try and scoop them out. Didn't work too well.



It's not a gruesome place at all. Last time we were there, Randy and I stayed on the rocks until the park closed at 10 p.m. I wasn't scared at all, even when he had me step back inside the rocks for a photo. Maybe I was there in a previous life and that's why I love it so much?

When we were at Busch Gardens over the summer, we had to stop and see the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales. The horses are massive. Their hooves are bigger than my head!

Skywatch Friday 17

Took this through the windshield of the car while we were driving to get my son's new video game Gears of War 2. It was released on Friday, so he the second he ran in the door after school, he ran through his chores and off to the near-by WalMart we ran. :) My 16-year old daughter drove us since I'm not up to that chore. I get too dizzy and tend to black out, so having me behind the wheel probably wouldn't be a good thing. Of course, what parent of a 16-year old child ever gets to drive anyway?

He's been playing pretty much non-stop since then, with quick sleep breaks. He was kind enough to allow his dad to play with him last night when he got home from work at midnight. Wasn't that sweet? Then I had to two of them blowing up alien invaders (at least I think that's what the villains are) all night.
