First day of school
My two weren't thrilled to see the summer end, I'm not either. I like having them around all the time, so we can just jump in the truck and take off for a day or two. Now we have to wait til the weekend to do things. That's what I miss about homeschooling.
My daughter starts high school today. She's nervous, but looking forward to it. She got contacts yesterday for the first time and had her hair dyed red, so she's a whole new person. My son is in 7th grade. He's decked out in his Halo 3 gear, of course. What else would a good gamer wear to school?
They posed for their annual going back to school photos and I took the neighbor's photo for the paper. Can't use my own kids in the paper. Looks bad.
The dog and cat are moping around now that they've left. They'll be attached to me all day until the school bus brings them back. It's funny, they walk in the door right when the General Hospital theme is playing. The dog (Aphrodite) hears the theme start and she goes right over to the door to wait. :) Just like Pavlov's dogs, only without the bell and drool.
I go pick up my new contacts in an hour. Never wore them before, so it'll take a while to get use to them. I'm ready though. After 25 years of wearing these glasses, I have grown to truly hate them.
Now I need to find more things to keep occupied during the day. I'll catch up on scrapbookin and do a little genealogy research, but it won't be enough. I'll have to find more things to write about for the paper. Any suggestions? What would you like to read about in your local paper?

My poor dog hunts my daughter until she gets home from school. Sadly, I find myself kind of doing the same thing!
Well what a nice post this was. I enjoyed reading the whole thing.
I just finished two stories or articles for our newspapers. One is about boys wearing dresses. Then and Now it is called and it is about me and my first haircut after which I was allowed to wear pants.
The other is called, Every fly that hits a window has a headache.
That is about my killing a fly yesterday and why I never stopped to think about--it was only trying to get outside. And I tied that into a bird (robin) that almost killed itself last week when it flew into the bow window.
I was real proud of both stories and they should appear in September.
So there are some ideas you can use for your newspaper.
Thanks for visiting my blog.
I sometimes think Dogs simply do out front, what we secretly wish we could do.:)
I remember my first day of school as a child....terrified beyond belief.....and again my first day of school as a parent, equally terrified. "This is MY Son. He is Special!" Later, my Daughter joined the ranks of back pack carriers. It seems that era will last forever, but by some trick of time, there's a beautiful Lady dressed in white on my arm..."Dad, quit sniffling and grow up!" and there's a walk down an aisle, then "Who gives this Woman to be married?" "I do, but not willingly, Buster, and if you ever hurt her, you'll wish you were never born" Then time plays it's tricks once again...."Amanda, this is your Grandpa! An evil grin crosses my face as I realize....this is where I get even!:P
Enjoy every second of the experience, because it flies by like snowflakes on the wind...
Hi Gretchen,
Thanks for the visit!!
I liked reading about your kids going back to school. It is always such a hard thing to do. I guess Summer vacation had to end.
Have a great day!
Rosemary
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I had one start high shcool this year, too. It's a whole different world than middle school.
I don't like when the kids go back to school either. Ours doesn't start back until the 4th. My son is at his high school orientation. His first year too. The kids look so cute in your picture. I love first day of school pictures. Such mixed emotions.
How was that first day? Full enough for you or too empty to be any fun?
I really enjoy reading community or neighbor news. Is your town small enough to post what people visited who and what they had to eat, stories about the grandchildren, etc? Those are my favorite things to read in small town newspapers.
As a local history buff I would like to read articles in a local paper about some of the oldest and longest residents and their recollections.
I always enjoy "slice of life" stories- interesting people, businesses, etc...
Oh, Gretchen, thanks for your comment on my blog, but oh dear, I was hoping that yours was going to be boring. I don't have time to read any more blogs but... yours looks really interesting!
Hope your head is improving. I can see that the needle thing wouldn't be that tempting as a repeat exercise.
I was always sorry when my children went back to school, too. Back to the old routine. But then, most of the time I was (and am) also a teacher, so of course I had to go back too, which somewhat coloured my views.
Oh Gretchen, the years go so fast... I can totally understand. There's almost something pignant about it when the kids go back to school...
Hope that you have a good Labor Day weekend ahead !
