Our morning

Randy got home from work a little after midnight and we went right to bed since we were going shopping early this morning in State college.

Around 2 a.m., we heard a horrid smashing sound outside our bedroom window. I thought somone had rolled their car. Randy jumped over me to look out the windown. His first words were, "Where's our truck?" Well, there were a few "colorful medifors" in there, too.

Some drunken fool had missed a turn and ran right up into our drive way, smashed into our truck and pushed it 22 feet up into the yard. :( ARRGGGHHH!!!! He then took off. Not only DUI, but hit and run. Too bad PA doesn't have the three strikes law.

We went running down the steps. I'm on the phone with 9-1-1 at that point and Randy is out the door. The fool comes back around just then, so Randy comes flying back in the house to get the car keys and takes off chasing him. The drunk's truck is making a horrid sound by now and died about a half mile from our house. The police were there in a few minutes. I walked down there and the smell from the guy's breath was enough to make me drunk. He walked over to us and said he had too much to drink, but had full coverage, so our truck would get fixed. He and his wife started screaming at each other at this point. She was screaming that he deserved a DUI, he was calling her a fat a@@..... a real COPS moment.

I drove the car home while Randy and the one cop walked up to the house to check out the truck and write up the report. Of course, I took a ton of photos. Probably not a good ideas to smash into a reporter's vehicle.

I find out later that the drunk decides to refuse the BAC, so that's an automatic one-year suspension of his driver's license. Then he decides to fight the police, so they had to take him to the ground and handcuff him. Why did I leave??? I would have loved to photograph that! Almost make it all worth while! Well, almost.

Anyway, that was how my day started. Tomorrow, we have to go get the police report on the whole mess and get the insurance paperwork started and see what all we have to do to get the truck fixed. Not a great way to start off Christmas week.

Anyone else ever deal with a drunk driver like this?

Oh Gretchen...what a mess! My parents had this happen to them two years ago...also in the middle of the night...and also a DUI/hit and run. The woman hit BOTH of their vehicles (totaled the car and took out the whole side of dad's truck). THEN she came BACK to the scene AFTER going home, changing clothes, getting her dog AND A DIFFERENT vehicle!

I'll never understand people. Good grief! This town is small enough that you can walk to every bar in town from every house. Why drive when you're that wasted?

We have the truck back now, all fixed. St. Marys Auto Body (the repair shop) did great job on it.
